It was cold. Ratsami didn't do very well in the cold, but it hadn't been so chilly earlier in the day when he had slipped past the gates of his familial estate. In the previous hours, he had felt excited and maybe even a little brave, as he wandered out into the streets of Chrysos, cane in hand. But now he was just cold...cold and scared. Originally, he had only intended to be away from the house for a short while...Just long enough to actually go to the market on his own, and pick out something nice or fun with his allowance without having to rely on other people. But...that hadn't gone so well. Given the fact that it was so rare for him to be out in the city proper, it was no surprise that he got lost but...The blind youth, in all of his naivete, believed it was something he could handle.
Well...Eventually he had managed to find his way back to the right place, something he was certain of due to the texture and style of the gate he was now standing in front of. He had spent so many afternoons simply clinging to the barrier and staring sightlessly out, wondering what the outside world was like, that he could easily recognize it with a touch. Yet, even though he knew he had finally made it home, he still lingered outside, shivering. Inwardly, he was torn, his heart beating a nervous rhythm against his sternum. After all...If he went in, he could warm up, and get out of the harsh air of the winter evening...But...If he went in...Father would be angry.
And that, perhaps most of all, more than the cold, more than the big, scary world he found himself teetering on the edge of, scared him. To say that the old man was frightening when mad was an understatement. Crinkling his nose up in worry and uncertainty, Ratsami let out a low huff...Followed by a sneeze. Shivering, he tugged his fluffy furred cloak about his thin frame a little more, and tried to steel himself. He really couldn't just stand out here all night. With a little awkward fumbling, cane tucked under his arm, he tested the gate...When it gave way, he pushed it open just enough to let his small body through.
Maybe if he was quiet enough he could sneak back to his room unnoticed...That notion almost made him giggle nervously, because he knew too well he was operating on borrowed time, for his caregiver would be here any moment...
