”Sanibelle, thank you so much for hosting this event. Without you and your family, I don’t think these kids could ever get a second chance. They do love a good party…and the community being pulled together…it’s a true blessing...”
Words of thanks wrung through the young woman’s head as she stared tiredly in the mirror in front of her. The sun’s light hit her face and shoulders as amethyst eyes blinked at the brightness. A pale hand lifted over her eyes as she pivoted her head and looked outside to a bright and clear sky. “This will be a wonderful day today. Filled with laughter and joy,” Sanibelle smiled as she picked up her hair brush and started to brush her long locks of gold.
The image of smiling children made Sanibelle’s heart melt. She had often visited the orphanage when she could with small toys, flowers, and blankets. The kids enjoyed her visits as much as she enjoyed visiting them. Lately though, the orphanage has been in a disarray with a recent fire that had happened. Luckily no one was hurt, but a quarter of the orphanage was gone, leaving 30 kids without rooms. Construction had been started, but funds were getting low. To see young children cramped in beds and cry because of the cold, made her body limp. The sadness and despair made her think of a way to make the kids happy and help raise funds for the orphanage. She remembered the orphanage would always host a huge party in the square in front of their building as a fundraiser. After the fire, the parties had stopped happening. The young woman saw it as an opportunity to start up the tradition again, because everyone in Zöld enjoyed the festivities. Merchants would bring their wares in, the restaurants would provide food where people could purchase for 5shillings at most where all proceeds would go to the orphanage, and the florists would decorate the square with flowers and multicolored ribbons.
A soft sigh escaped her lips as she looked at her face again. High cheekbones, pale lips, beautiful eyes and perfect eyebrows. Skin flawless and the color of perfect nobility. Amethyst eyes glanced towards her bedroom door, and watched as her mother and aunt walked in holding a decorative dress and hair pieces. “Hello Mama and Auntie,” Sanibelle smiled as she sat at her vanity in her white night dress.
“Sanibelle! You ought to get dressed! The Square is almost done and the cooks and merchants are showing up. Papa is already dressed and at the square setting up our space,” her Auntie said in a hurry as she placed Sanibelle’s dress on her bed. Her Aunt and mother were both dressed as well. Her mother, Georgia was dressed in a royal purple gown with satin embroidered with silver applique. Her dark blonde hair was up in a bun of thick braids with a matching purple ribbon. Ruxandra, her aunt, wore a deep earthy brown green dress with brown velvet panels. Her brown hair was up the same way as her sister-in-laws. “Come child,” Ruxandra said beckoning Sanibelle over. The young woman stood up and hurried over to her aunt and mother. She was quickly stripped down and placed in white under dress with a bustier that made her ample breasts bigger than she wanted.
Sanibelle was then led back to her vanity where her mother and aunt began to work on her long gold hair. Fingers moved small strands of hair into small braids and thick twists with red ribbon twisted in. Curls were defined and placed strategically in a way that showed off her natural beauty. When done, Georgia placed small gold beads into Sanibelle’s hair to accent the hair more. “I can’t believe how beautiful you look…so young and vivacious,” Georgia smiled as she grabbed Sanibelle’s dress. The dress was a long dress with a slight train made out of tan silk, red satin paneling with gold applique and small rubies on her the chest applique. A wide belt cinched in her waist making her appear more feminine and curvaceous. Sanibelle had never dressed in any of the fancy fabrics she’s used to make clients’ clothing. It almost felt weird for her to wear such things. She felt out of place.
Ruxandra quickly put a pair light gold satin slippers with beaded designs on her niece’s feet to finish her outfit. “Are you sure…I don’t look over done?” Sanibelle asked, her face worried.
“You look stunning!” Ruxandra smiled. “You’ll out do every girl there.”
“Your auntie is right, so stop worrying! You have an event to host,” her mother said as she sprayed her daughter with a scent of vanilla and lavender. Sanibelle couldn’t even look at herself in the mirror before her mother and aunt dragged her down the stairs. Her mother grabbed some cloaks in case it rained and the three women headed off to the square on their horses.
At the square, the women met up Alexander, Sanibelle’s father who was dressed as dapper as his wife, daughter and sister. “Doesn’t she look lovely darling?” Georgia smiled as her husband helped her off her horse.
“Yes dear, she looks as radiant as the sun,” he smiled back as he helped Sanibelle off her horse, and then helped his sister. “People are already showing up, Belle. You really are good at these charity things aren’t you dear?”
“Ah yes…I guess so?” she smiled nervously. Her father was right. Pretty much half of Zöld had showed up in their finest. The smells of meat and vegetables wafted through the air, mingling with the tall towers of fresh flowers. Merchants were already selling fans and furs and whatever they bought to customers. Some people even came up to Sanibelle and thanked her for her good deed saying she was a blessed heart and a good woman. Amethyst eyes even already saw some of the orphans dancing in their best clothes as well. They were smiling and chasing each other around even though the music hadn’t even started. She was soon found by the owners of the orphanage, Mr. and Mrs. Viscasao. “Al hello, Mr. and Mrs. Viscasao. How are you both?”
“Very well, Sanibelle. We couldn’t believe how many people have showed up…you truly are a blessing,”Mrs. Viscasao said with a gentle smile. “It’s time we make an announcement before everyone gets too antsy.” The older couple hugged the young woman before disappearing off into the throngs of people. She soon saw them on a wooden platform about 5ft from her. “Hello everyone,” Mr. Viscasao started. “Before the festivities start, we’d like to thank you all for attending. This orphanage has been our lives. After last year’s fire, you have all shown great support and love for us, the kids and the City of Zöld. We’d also like to thank a talented young woman who made this dance and festival happen. She’s been visiting us and the children ever since she turned 16. She’d bring the children food, toys, flowers and blankets. Her smile would light up a room and the children would cry every time she had to leave, but would run out the front door when they saw her approaching. After four years of volunteer work, Sanibelle Greenwood is still showing her love and support to the orphanage. If you see her around, please tell her thank you. Without her, these kids wouldn’t have the hope they have now. So please, enjoy yourselves everyone!” With that, the musicians began to play and people hollered and began to dance.
Sanibelle awkwardly stood there before some children found her and dragged her into the circle of dancing. There, she graced people with her smile and youthful energy. Caught in the moment, the children had accidentally spun her too much, making the young woman lose her footing. She felt her body fall slightly back into another person. Sanibelle quickly straightened herself out. “Oh do please excuse me,” she said with an embarrassed smile. “I must’ve lost my balance…”
“Are you alright Ms. Sanibelle,” a young girl asked.
“Yes Ophelia, I’m fine. I think we just need to lay off the spinning for a while,” Sanieblle replied with a gentle smile.
