[attr="class","sej"] The Avenue of Critics. Selton only came to this area to observe and inspect some of the newer merchandise, and this evening was no different. While she might not have shown it, she was curious to see the new inventions her fellow humans made, and especially interested in whatever snake oil the con artists could cook up. They were usually peddling some piss smelling liquid that either claimed to give bald men flowing locks, or to soothe painful joints. They always had accomplices lingering in the crowd, who would try the false medicine, and proclaim it to work. That sort of deceit always bothered Selton, who preferred good, honest work. She couldn’t personally stop the frauds from pushing their wares onto the ignorant, but could spread the doubt.
She ignored the odd and unfamiliar items on display, stopped a few times to listen to a poet or two, and ended up spending more time than she expected browsing some pottery. By the time she had neared the center of the alley, her arms were laden with scrolls, a marionette, and a small, ceramic dragon. It was really hard for her not to buy something when she saw an item that really caught her fancy.
"Come, come, gather round! I have something that will revolutionize the war against the monsters that roam outside the city walls!" Selton's ears twitched slightly at the claim. She had no real interest in weapons, but she would also like to wander out of the city without the need for an escort, or the threat of a monster weighing on her mind. So, as casual as could be, she shuffled closer to the growing crowd that surrounded the man.
As expected, the man dilly dallied by giving them a rundown of what they already knew - the monsters that had devastated Piros, the clansmen who fought to protect the people, etc., etc. Selton almost told him to come out with it already, but someone had beaten her to the punch - a pimply faced youth, of all people. "Fine, fine." the man grumbled, as he fumbled around for something on his back table.
Selton raised an eyebrow when he held up a beaker filled with a sickly green substance. "I propose - wildfire. It's an extremely volatile chemical, that burns like fire…except it's also difficult to put out, without the aid of copious amounts of sand." He paused, a wicked grin on his face as he eyed the crowd. Selton didn't know about the rest of them, but she had her doubts.
"Pah! Fire, he says! What good will that do," a wrinkled old crone near the front spat out. "You think a little fire will stop those beasts?" There was a murmur of agreement from the crowd.
"Folks, I don't think you understand here. We're taking about a substance that has the ability to burn indefinitely. Fire eventually dies out, but this-"
"Oh yeah?! Prove it!"
Little beads of sweat were forming on the inventor's face. "I… I can't. It's too dangerous to test out here…"
Selton disentangled herself from the crowd as cries of "Fraud!" and the like assailed the air. She wasn't exactly sure how she felt about such a flame, anyway. A fire that could burn indefinitely? At what cost? Something that dangerous just shouldn't exist. Approaching her can be a tad difficult at times, depending on her mood, but doesn't actively try to scare off people. She's quiet and likes to keep to herself, and is more likely to have a small cluster of close friends. Her interests coincide with those who enjoy athletics, books, herbalism, etc. She looks out for her friends, doing her best to warn or dissuade them from doing anything foolish/dangerous. As a child, Selton was barely distinguishable from her five older brothers. They all possessed the platinum blonde hair and pale blue eyes of the Reznor family, and bore wraith-like figures. Being the youngest and runt of the litter, Selton had no time for daintiness or passivity. She had to fight with her brothers on a daily basis, just to prevent them from pushing her around. As her mother, a hardy and salty woman would say, "A girl child ain't safe in a family of men" (timeline: her nose was broken at 8)
The scrawny girl sprouted to her full height at the age of twelve, obscenely tall like the other members of her family, but still somewhat shorter than her brothers. Selton toned her lean body by roughhousing or playing with her brothers and the other neighborhood children. They had very little in the way of toys, but the Junkyard made for a suitable playground. Although they lived in constant fear from attacks and struggled to live day to day, they did the best to make do with their situation.
There was only so much Selton could take, however. She was sensitive to the looks of pity outsiders gave her and her ilk, and tired of being the ugly truth that people liked to pretend didn't exist. She was done with being complacent and living in fear. Most of all, she was sick of watching her parents struggle to keep their children healthy and alive, even at the expense of eating very little themselves.
Her parents had reservations about her leaving, being only sixteen at the time, but were reassured when three of her brothers elected to go with her. The four siblings slowly made their way to Zöld. It was better than they expected, but finding a job and a place to live was not easy. While her brothers could only find odd jobs in the beginning, Selton was fortunate to apprentice as an herbalist, which was probably one of the best places to realize just how petty, simple minded, and oblivious people could be.
People were, from her perspective, more concerned with following their dreams or getting rich and moving to the city of Chrysós, when they should be more concerned about the forgotten city, and just how easily their wonderful little lives could be shattered in one blow. There were times when she couldn't keep her opinions to herself, and was often cuffed by her master, who would profusely apologize for his "ignorant and naïve" ward, whom he had claimed to take in as an act of charity. She grew to hate her job and her master, but could hardly walk out.
The years dragged on, eventually leading to the end of her apprenticeship, and a time where she could and her brothers could accommodate the rest of the family. Sadly, her parents never made it out of the slums, but the rest of her brothers and their families did. She was happy to be reunited with them, but could not shake the cognitive dissonance. On one hand, she was glad to have left a troublesome city, but on the other, she held much contempt for the people who did not realize the gravity of the situation, or those who only pretended to understand.
Things weren't always so bad, though. She found comfort in the form of another woman, a relationship that disrupted the monotony and loneliness in her life. It didn't stand the test of time, nor was it so easily replaced, but it gave her a sense of ease in her life. Mixing concoctions and tending to the ill did in its own way, as well. Bitter as she is at times by her stance in life, she wouldn't give it up to return to a fallen city.
